RESUMO

To address the growing global water demand, it is imperative to implement advanced treatment systems and sustainable alternatives for managing the large amount of waste generated during the water purification process, known as water treatment sludge (WTS). Worldwide, researchers and companies are exploring alternatives and methods for the valorization of WTS as a raw material in other processes. It is urgent that all productive sectors, which contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, adopt this management principle to ensure more sustainable production, contributing to the global goal of climate neutrality. Notably, in civil construction, incorporating WTS as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) shows great promise, considering that the industrial waste currently used for this purpose is increasingly restricted. The use of WTS as a raw material in the cement industry not only contributes to the reduction of the carbon footprint, but also reduces the high waste load still disposed of in landfills. The emerging applications for WTP sludge are reviewed, with emphasis on its valorization in the civil construction as an SCM. The main characteristics of this waste and their impacts on the environment are also addressed.

RESUMO

The assessment of testicular artery blood flow by colour and pulsed-Doppler ultrasonography is an important diagnostic technique to assess vascular perfusion. Recently, it has been suggested as a good predictor of sperm quality. On the other hand, through the alkaline Comet Assay, it is possible to quantify sperm oxidative DNA damage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between routine sperm parameters, testicular artery blood flow and oxidative DNA damage in canine sperm. Testicular ultrasonography and sperm collection were performed on 12 male dogs, with the animals being allocated into 2 groups, according to the classification of the ejaculates' quality, as normozoospermic (N; n = 7) or non-normozoospermic (OAT; n = 5). Seven dogs aged between 1.5 and 8.0 years old were included in group N and 5 dogs, aged between 2.0 and 11.0 years old, were included in group OAT. The sperm-rich fraction of the ejaculates was evaluated for sperm routine parameters and DNA damage by comet assay. Colour and pulsed-Doppler ultrasonography were used to evaluate the blood flow of the supratesticular and marginal arteries of right and left testis. Group OAT presented higher levels of sperm oxidative DNA damage (A.U.) in comparison to group N (N:11.7 ± 9.9; OAT:34.2 ± 6.1; P< .001). The peak of systolic velocity was positively correlated with sperm concentration (r = 0.685; P= .005). The resistive and pulsatility indexes (RI and PI) of the supratesticular artery were negatively correlated with sperm membrane integrity (HOST+) (r = -0.594; P = .042; r = -0.612; P = .035, respectively). The end diastolic velocity (EDV) of the supratesticular artery was positively correlated with sperm concentration (r = 0.748; P = .005) and negatively correlated with sperm oxidative DNA damage (r = -0.766; P = .004). Our results suggest that the assessment of the testicular artery blood flow by colour and pulsed-Doppler ultrasonography could be a good predictor of sperm quality in dogs in terms of sperm concentration, membrane integrity and sperm oxidative DNA damage.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the association of traumatic dental injury (TDI) on oral health-related to quality of life (OHRQoL) in children and adolescents. METHODS: A focused structured question using Population (P), Exposition (E), Comparisons (C), Outcomes (O) (PECO) was designed: "Does traumatic dental injury impact OHRQoL of children and adolescents?" A broad search according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) was conducted. Evaluation criteria of methodological quality and risk of bias control were applied to selected articles. A fixed-effect model was used for the meta-analysis, and the quality of the evidence was performed using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. RESULTS: Nineteen studies were qualified with moderate to high quality, and 11 studies were considered for meta-analysis. Negative impact on OHRQoL was detected for children in the symptoms domain (P = .005; IC; -0.07 [-0.12, -0.02]) with moderate certainty of evidence quality level (GRADE). For adolescents, the total scale and all domain presented statistical significance (P < .05) with moderate certainty of evidence in the areas of functional limitation and social well-being (GRADE). CONCLUSIONS: Based on articles with moderate to high quality, the impact of TDI on OHRQoL in children under age 10 was only significant in the symptom domain using Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS). The impact of TDI on OHRQoL in early adolescents aged 11 to 14 was significant in every assessed domain using Child Perception Questionnaire (CPQ11-14). However, future studies should be done improving the available certainty of evidence considered moderate. (CRD42016035686).

RESUMO

We described and compared the floristic composition, richness, species diversity and structure of the tree-shrub component in pairs of Typical Cerrado (Cerrado Típico) and rocky outcrop Cerrado (Cerrado Rupestre) in two localities in Tocantins State. In each locality, we set up 10 plots of 20 × 50 m at a site, the Cerrado Típico and other Cerrado Rupestre, and sampled the individuals with Db30cm ≥ 5 cm. The rocky outcrop Cerrado did not present any trend towards lower richness and basal area compared to the Cerrado on deep soil. Few species occurred across the four sites and only two important species (Anacardium occidentale and Qualea parviflora) in the four vegetation structure were common to both environments assessed. Furthermore, the occurrence of habitat-specialist species of rocky outcrops and high altitudes (Mimosa claussenii, Tibouchina papyrus, Schwartzia adamantium and Wunderlichia cruelsiana) and the high dissimilarity among sites suggest that altitude is the main responsible for the floristic dissimilarity, followed by the influence of substrate type. Therefore, the information with respect to phytophysiognomy type as a parameter to select areas for conservation, by itself, does not effectively ensure biodiversity preservation, owing to the existing flora heterogeneity not only at local but also at regional scale, revealed by the floristic and structural particularity of each site.
